The Farm
In the heart of Chianti Rufina
In the late 1960s, Ugo Ponticelli – Paolo’s grandfather – bought a house with a piece of land in the “Poggiolo estate.” Located in the heart of the Chianti Rufina production area along the Sieve valley, this is where the first vineyard of the Ponticelli family was planted. In 2006 Podere Il Balzo’s wine was born and in 2011 the 100% Sangiovese reserve debuted.
Il Balzo Today
The conversion to organic farming began in 2016. On the 30 hectares of the farm, 5 are vineyards, 3 are olive groves, the rest are pasture, arable land and forest. Federico Giuntini, owner of the Selvapiana farm and Franco Bernabei, expert winemaker, are the consultants for winemaking.
FROM THE BUONA PRACTICA TO ORGANIC
The official conversion to organic began in 2016, for an ever closer relationship with nature, for a constant commitment to certifying the results.
STRONG WOODSMAN, PASSIONATE VINTER
The hands of Paolo Ponticelli safely handle the ax in the woods, the feet of Paolo as a child, are irresistibly attracted to the must in the vat. Wood and wine, rings of a DNA that unfolds decidedly, imprinting on the life of Paolo who lives nature in its entirety.
A CONTINUOUS SEARCH
From the mid-90s Paolo took over the management of the winery and in 1999 planted his first vineyard.
Love grew and became wisdom up to the birth of Addiaccio, son of nature, wind and hail.
